Empowering the Educators Behind the Green Transition
CREATE develops a comprehensive GreenComp training package to help Agro-VET teachers become champions of sustainability education
Building climate resilience in agriculture requires more than new technologies and updated curricula. It requires educators who can inspire future generations to think critically, act responsibly and embrace sustainability as a way of life.
Recognising the central role of teachers in shaping the future of agricultural education, the CREATE project has successfully developed a comprehensive GreenComp Training Package designed specifically for Agricultural Vocational Education and Training (Agro-VET) professionals in Tanzania.
GreenComp, the European Sustainability Competence Framework, is increasingly recognised across Europe as a key reference for developing sustainability competences among learners. Rather than focusing solely on environmental knowledge, the framework promotes a holistic understanding of sustainability by combining values, systems thinking, futures literacy, critical reflection, collaboration and action.
To support the integration of these principles into agricultural education, CREATE partners from Tanzania and Europe worked together to develop a suite of practical training resources tailored to the realities of Agro-VET institutions.
At the heart of the package is a comprehensive training programme introducing educators to the philosophy, structure and practical application of GreenComp. The programme explores the framework’s four competence areas and twelve sustainability competences, helping teachers understand how sustainability can be embedded across agricultural training programmes and everyday teaching practice.
The training materials go beyond theoretical explanations. Dedicated learning resources guide educators through topics such as sustainability values, systems thinking, critical thinking, futures literacy, adaptability, collective action and individual responsibility. The objective is not only to increase knowledge but also to strengthen educators’ ability to facilitate transformative learning experiences that prepare learners for a rapidly changing agricultural landscape.
To support implementation, CREATE has also developed several innovative operational tools. A GreenComp Proficiency Rubric enables teachers to assess the progression of learners across all twelve sustainability competences, offering clear indicators from beginner to advanced levels while remaining firmly grounded in agricultural learning contexts.
A GreenComp SWOT Tool encourages reflection on institutional strengths, challenges, opportunities and barriers related to sustainability education, helping teachers and institutions identify practical pathways for improvement and innovation.
Meanwhile, the Sustainability Scenario Planning Canvas introduces educators and learners to future-oriented thinking, enabling them to explore sustainability challenges, map complex systems, imagine alternative futures and design actions that contribute to more resilient agricultural communities.
What makes these resources particularly valuable is their strong connection to agricultural realities. Rather than presenting sustainability as an abstract concept, the materials address issues directly relevant to farming, food systems, rural development, biodiversity, climate adaptation and community resilience. This ensures that GreenComp becomes a practical and meaningful framework for both educators and learners.
The GreenComp Training Package represents an important step towards strengthening the capacity of Tanzanian Agro-VET providers to prepare learners not only for employment, but also for active participation in the green transition. By empowering educators with new tools, methodologies and perspectives, CREATE is helping build a more resilient, sustainable and future-oriented agricultural education ecosystem.
As the project moves forward, these resources will support capacity-building activities, piloting initiatives and long-term institutional development across participating Agro-VET institutions.
