CREATE Partners Co-Develop New Training Curriculum to Strengthen Climate-Resilient Agriculture in Tanzania

Five innovative training modules will equip Agro-VET learners and professionals with the green and digital skills needed for the future of farming

The CREATE project has reached another important milestone with the successful co-development of a new Agricultural VET Curriculum Framework designed to strengthen climate resilience, sustainability and innovation within Tanzania’s agricultural sector.

Building directly on the findings of the project’s comprehensive needs analysis, European and Tanzanian partners worked together to design a training programme that responds to the most urgent challenges identified by farmers, educators, employers and policymakers. The result is a practical, future-oriented learning framework that addresses critical skills gaps in climate-smart agriculture, digital farming, sustainable resource management and environmental stewardship.

The curriculum consists of five specialised training modules that together provide a comprehensive introduction to the key competences required for modern and sustainable agriculture.

The first module focuses on climate change and its impact on Tanzanian agriculture, helping learners understand how changing rainfall patterns, droughts, rising temperatures and extreme weather events affect agricultural productivity and food security. Participants are introduced to adaptation strategies and resilience-building approaches that can support farming communities facing increasing climate pressures.

A second module explores efficient irrigation systems, with particular attention to drip irrigation and sub-irrigation technologies. Learners develop practical knowledge on water-use efficiency, irrigation planning and sustainable resource management, recognising water as one of the most critical assets for agricultural production in a changing climate.

The curriculum also introduces learners to digital agriculture through a dedicated module on Decision Support Systems. Participants explore how weather stations, digital platforms and data-driven tools can support better farm management, improve irrigation scheduling, and enhance pest and disease monitoring. By promoting digital confidence and technological inclusion, the programme seeks to bridge the gap between innovation and practical farming realities.

Another training module addresses soil health and sustainable plant nutrition. Learners are introduced to soil fertility management, nutrient cycles, composting techniques and environmentally responsible fertilisation practices that can improve productivity while protecting natural resources for future generations.

The fifth module focuses on sustainable plant protection and responsible risk management. Participants learn about plant protection products, occupational safety, environmental risks and integrated pest management approaches that reduce negative impacts on both people and ecosystems.

What makes this curriculum particularly distinctive is its collaborative nature. Rather than transferring existing models, the training framework was jointly developed by European and Tanzanian experts, ensuring that international good practices are combined with local realities, agricultural traditions and climate challenges. This approach guarantees that the learning content remains both globally relevant and locally applicable.

The curriculum also embraces the principles of GreenComp, the European Sustainability Competence Framework, encouraging learners to develop systems thinking, critical thinking, adaptability, collective action and environmental responsibility alongside technical agricultural knowledge.

By translating research findings into concrete educational solutions, CREATE is helping build a new generation of agricultural professionals equipped to support sustainable food production, climate resilience and rural development in Tanzania.

The newly developed curriculum framework will serve as the foundation for future training activities, capacity-building initiatives and learning resources to be implemented throughout the next phases of the project.
