Small Everyday Actions, Big Environmental Impact: LEAP II Launches Green Skills Training for Citizens
A new multilingual micro-learning programme helps citizens develop practical sustainability habits for everyday life, home, mobility, food, consumption, and community living
Helping communities become more sustainable does not only depend on policies and institutional strategies. Real environmental change also begins with everyday choices, habits, and behaviours adopted by citizens in their personal and professional lives. With this vision in mind, the LEAP II – Local Adult Education Policy II project has developed a dedicated training programme for citizens focused on practical green skills and sustainable living.
Available through the LEAP II online learning platform, this second set of micro-learning materials was specifically designed to make sustainability education simple, accessible, and directly connected to everyday life. The course offers attractive and easy-to-follow learning units that help citizens better understand how daily decisions related to energy, food, transport, shopping, housing, and waste can contribute to more sustainable communities and healthier environments.
Unlike traditional long-form training programmes, the LEAP II citizen training uses a micro-learning approach, allowing participants to learn progressively through short and practical modules that can easily fit into everyday routines. The programme encourages reflection, awareness, and action without requiring previous expertise in sustainability topics.
The training covers a broad range of themes connected to environmental responsibility and sustainable lifestyles.
Participants can begin by exploring topics such as “Understanding Your Carbon Footprint” and “Energy Efficiency at Home,” helping them better understand how daily activities influence climate change and how simple adjustments can reduce environmental impact while also improving energy savings.
Other modules focus on sustainable housing and resource management, including “Green Construction and Housing,” “Reducing Water Usage,” and “Home Composting and Waste Reduction.” These units provide practical suggestions and awareness-building tools that citizens can realistically apply in their homes and communities.
The programme also dedicates significant attention to food sustainability and responsible consumption. Units such as “Sustainable Eating,” “Avoiding Food Waste,” and “Urban Gardening and Sustainable Agriculture” encourage participants to reflect on food systems, local production, waste reduction, and healthier environmental practices connected to nutrition and daily consumption.
Environmental awareness is further strengthened through modules addressing modern consumer behaviours and waste challenges. Topics including “Plastic Use and Alternatives,” “Responsible Shopping Habits,” “Conscious Clothing Choices,” and “Electronic Waste Management” help learners better understand how consumption patterns affect ecosystems, resources, and long-term sustainability.
Mobility and environmental protection are also important components of the training. Through units such as “Sustainable Transportation Options” and “Urban Biodiversity and Conservation,” participants explore greener ways of moving through cities while discovering the importance of protecting urban ecosystems and natural habitats within local communities.
The programme additionally addresses tourism and seasonal habits through modules such as “Sustainable Tourism” and “Eco-Friendly Holiday Celebrations,” demonstrating that sustainability can be integrated into leisure, traditions, and lifestyle choices in meaningful and realistic ways.
One of the key strengths of the LEAP II citizen training programme is its practical and non-technical nature. The materials were intentionally designed to be accessible to a broad audience regardless of educational background, age, or previous experience with environmental topics. The focus is not on imposing complex theories, but on helping citizens understand that sustainable living can begin with realistic and manageable actions taken every day.
Through this training programme, LEAP II contributes to raising environmental awareness, strengthening green competences, and promoting more active citizen participation in the transition toward sustainable communities across Europe.
The LEAP II project was co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission, supporting innovation and cooperation in education, lifelong learning, and sustainability across Europe. All learning materials and project resources are available in multilingual and open-access formats, ensuring free and inclusive access for communities, organisations, and citizens.
