SELF Project publishes EntreComp-based matrix to define key competences for aspiring solo entrepreneurs
The Erasmus+ project SELF – Solo Entrepreneurs Learning Framework, co-funded by the European Union, has published its EntreComp-based competence matrix developed within Work Package 2 (WP2).
The matrix represents one of the core analytical outputs of the SELF project and provides a structured overview of the skills, knowledge and attitudes considered most relevant for solo entrepreneurship and self-employment pathways among Higher Education students and young aspiring entrepreneurs.
Building on the mapping activities carried out by the project consortium, the matrix was developed to identify which competences should be strengthened through the SELF training curriculum and educational resources. It therefore acts as a bridge between the research phase of the project and the development of the training materials.
The matrix is inspired by EntreComp, the European Entrepreneurship Competence Framework, and helps translate entrepreneurial learning into concrete learning outcomes connected to solo entrepreneurship. Through this approach, the SELF consortium aims to support a more structured, coherent and competence-based understanding of what young people need in order to explore self-employment as a realistic professional pathway.
The matrix highlights the importance of developing competences related to:
- entrepreneurial initiative and opportunity recognition;
- creativity, innovation and idea development;
- planning, organisation and decision-making;
- financial and economic awareness;
- digital readiness and self-management;
- communication, networking and collaboration;
- adaptability, resilience and lifelong learning.
By identifying these competence areas, the SELF project contributes to the design of training resources that are practical, learner-centred and aligned with the real needs of aspiring solo entrepreneurs.
The EntreComp-based matrix is particularly relevant for:
- Higher Education institutions;
- educators and trainers;
- students and young graduates;
- entrepreneurship support organisations;
- employability practitioners;
- and policy stakeholders interested in entrepreneurial learning and self-employment support.
The publication of this matrix confirms the commitment of the SELF consortium to developing educational resources that are not only accessible, but also grounded in evidence and aligned with recognised European competence frameworks.
In line with the project’s Open Access approach, the EntreComp-based matrix is available:
