IHF asbl joined the online Kick-Off meeting of PADALP – Parental Advocacy in Daily Life Practices: Transformative Learning for The Families of Disabled, a project co-financed by the Erasmus+ Programme

On January 15, 2021, IHF asbl joined the online Kick-Off Meeting of PADALP – Parental Advocacy in Daily Life Practices: Transformative Learning for The Families of Disabled, a Project co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Commission, which brings together four Partners from four countries (Belgium, Italy, Poland, and Turkey). The Kick-Off Meeting, hosted by R.T. Ankara Governorship, was originally planned in Ankara, but has been rescheduled online due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“Disability is part of being human” – aptly highlights the WHO, and “almost everyone will temporarily or permanently experience disability at some point in their life”, disability being nothing but the result of an interaction between individuals with a health condition and personal and environmental factors. The WHO calculated that, in 2018, approximately 15 percent of the world population was disabled, and this figure is growing steadily.

Disability rights now being framed as human rights, the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda calls for “Strengthening people with disabilities for an inclusive, fair and sustainable development”. Yet, according to the last World Disability Report of the UN, disabled people still face a number of disadvantages, resulting in lower educational success, lower economic participation, higher poverty rates and difficult access to essential services such as health, education, employment and transportation.

The PADALP project stands as a concrete response to this need and recognises the pivotal role families of disabled people can play in facilitating these people’s social inclusion.

The project will capitalise on the valuable experience of its Partners to provide parental advocacy in daily life practices by transformative andragogical methods for the families of disabled. In particular, project partners will

  1. Help families of disabled people identify the problems they face and address the problems with a collective approach
  2. Develop a “right-based daily life practices” course module (Advocacy Course Module) so that families of the disabled clearly know what their rights are

In compliance with the Erasmus Plus’s Open Access Requirement, all the learning material will be accessible to all, free of charge and in multilingual versions.

In the Project, IHF asbl brings its expertise and experience as a key social player in international and European projects. In particular, IHF asbl ensures the “European Dimension” of the Project as it carries out all the technical tasks from a “European Perspective”, i.e. carrying out analysis of relevant EU policies and initiatives; extrapolating EU relevant case studies, lessons learned and best practices.
